Police Chief Charles Bordeleau issued a statement Thursday saying, despite Ottawa's opposition to the legalization of cannabis, the service is "open to exploring, and exploring in consultation with communities, a range of options related to policing that might include the involvement of Ottawa police, including by legal and operational agreements." Two weeks ago, when council was debating the current services bylaw that governs marijuana sales, deputy police chief Tim Dolan was clear that there was no plan to step in to police cannabis sales. The chief and council changed that on Wednesday by saying Ottawa police would be involved in the legal sale of marijuana and the service would enforce the bylaws. The new bylaw says police could issue tickets or make arrests, and the act allows fines to be $150 to $750 or the seizure of goods. The report on the issue was presented to council on Wednesday evening. To view the report click here. Bordeleau has said the service is examining a number of options, including whether it would be possible to continue under the existing powers it has, and if it needs new powers. The report states the service does not have the resources to police commercial operations, and it cannot send officers on overtime. Sgt. Greg Camp, who is the service's leader for drug enforcement in the city, said the service is looking at how it could police the sales of marijuana. "We're looking at a range of options, not only under the Criminal Code, but also under the City of Ottawa bylaw," he told reporters Thursday. "It's important to note that it would not take away from any of our existing activities. It would be done as an additional. It would be looking at the full gamut of what might be required, and I'm not going to comment on any particular option at this time. What I will say is we are looking at it and exploring a number of options." A Department of Justice representative said Thursday the service is conducting market research and said there are currently no plans to start enforcing the new bylaw. Mayor Jim Watson said Thursday he wasn't concerned about the idea of having 595f342e71
